They Trail Behind Me

They trail behind me
Shrunken heads of so little substance
They float on currents of air
Strung together
The tail of the kite
That is my heart
Anchoring themselves tightly
To assure they never
Drift away

They are of so little substance
I forget that they are there
I forget how large their numbers
How long the strand on which they tether
I forget their former un-shrunken weight
I forget they ever lived
These dead dreams of mine
Until one of them
Catches on the branch of an event
Or gets wedged between
The future and the past
And pulls my heart up short
Causing sharp pain
As deep as my life
